Question :11

A race course is 400 metres long. A and B run a race and A wins by 5 metres. B and C run over the same course and B wins by 4 metres. C and D run over it and D wins by 16 metres. If A and D run over it, then who would win and by how much ?

Answer: (b)

The statements in the question can be reformulated as follows:

If A covers 400 m, B covers 395 m.

If B covers 400 m, C covers 396 m.

If D covers 400 m, C covers 384 m.

Therefore, if B covers 395 m, then C will cover,

${396}/{400}$ × 395 = 391.05 m

Again, If C covers 391.05 m, then D will cover

${400}/{384}$ × 391.05 = 407.34 m.

Thus, if A and D run over 400 m, then D wins by 7.3 m.

Question :12

Two pipes A and B can fill a tank in 15 and 12 hours respectively. Pipe B alone is kept open for $3/4$ of the time and both pipes are kept open for the remaining time. In how many hours will the tank will be full ?

Answer: (b)

Let the required time to fill the tank be x hours

According to question

$1/12(3/4x)+1/15(x-3/4x)+1/12(x-3/4x)=1$

⇒ $x/16+x/60+x/48=1$

∴ x = 10 hours.

Question :13

Suresh can finish a piece of work by himself in 42 days. Mahesh, who is $1/5$ times more efficient as Suresh, requires X days to finish the work if working all by himself. Then what is the value of X ?

Answer: (b)

Suresh, working alone for 42 days = 1 unit of work. Mahesh is 1/5 times more efficient than Suresh. So Mahesh is 6/5 times as efficient as Suresh. Hence Mahesh should require 5/6th of the time taken by Suresh.

Therefore time taken by Mahesh

= $5/6$ × 42 = 35 days.

Question :14

A train does a journey without stoppage in 8 hours, if it had travelled 5 km/h faster, it would have done the journey in 6 hours 40 minutes. Find its original speed.

Answer: (a)

Let original speed = S km/h

Here, distance to be covered is constant

∴ S × 8 = (S + 5)$({20}/3)$

⇒8S -${20}/3 S = {100}/3⇒S = {100}/4 = 25$ km/h

Question :15

A and B decide to travel from place X to place Y by bus. A has ? 10 with him and he finds that itis 80% of the bus fare for two persons. B finds that he has Rs.3 with him and hands it over to A. In this context, which one of the following statements is correct ?

Answer: (b)

Let cost of 1 ticket is R. x.

∴ for A, 10 = ${80}/{100}$ × 2x

⇒x = ${50}/8 = {25}/4$ = 6.25 Rs.

Now B gives Rs. 3 to A.

So, A has 13 Rs.

Cost of 2 tickets = 12.50 Rs., which is more than enough to buy 2 tickets.

∴ (a) Rules out

(b) is clearly ruled out

(c) is true, because after buying 2 tickets.

A is left with 13 – 12.50 = 50 paise
